A long-standing tradition of higher education in Istria
The Faculty of Economics and Tourism “Dr. Mijo Mirković” in Pula is built on more than six decades of tradition in higher education in the fields of economics and tourism. As the oldest and largest constituent of the Juraj Dobrila University of Pula, the Faculty continuously develops study programs, scientific research, and cooperation with the business sector, relying on the values of quality, openness, and responsibility toward the community.
The roots of higher education in economics in Istria date back to 1960, when the Higher School of Economics “Dr. Mijo Mirković” was established—the first such institution in Croatia outside Zagreb. Over the years, the Faculty has grown and evolved in line with the needs of the economy and society, and today it offers all levels of study—from undergraduate and graduate to postgraduate specialist and lifelong learning programs, as well as an international postgraduate doctoral program.
Throughout its history, the Faculty has educated more than 10,000 students, many of whom have become key contributors to the economic and social development of the region and beyond.
Study programs and learning approach
Study programs are based on modern educational approaches that connect theory and practice. Emphasis is placed on developing analytical and critical thinking, teamwork, and entrepreneurial skills, along with the use of information and communication technologies and solving real-world problems. Students are given the opportunity to gain practical experience through cooperation with more than 130 business partners, via internships, project work, and field teaching. This approach contributes to a better understanding of the real sector and preparation for the labor market.
In addition to classes, students have access to numerous extracurricular activities, competitions, and projects that further encourage their professional and personal development.
Connection with the economy and entrepreneurship
The Faculty systematically develops cooperation with the business sector and enables students to establish direct contact with employers during their studies. Guest lectures, workshops, and company visits are regularly organized, linking theory and practice and allowing students to build professional networks while studying.
Special emphasis is placed on the development of entrepreneurial competencies. Within the Student Entrepreneurial Incubator (SPIN), students develop their own business ideas and projects with mentoring support, from initial concept to implementation. Through its Alumni network, the Faculty maintains active connections with former students, who participate in teaching and extracurricular activities and contribute to the exchange of experience between academia and the business community.
International dimension of studies
International cooperation is an important part of the Faculty’s development. Students have the opportunity to participate in mobility programs and spend part of their studies at partner institutions in Europe and worldwide, as well as complete internships abroad.
Such experiences contribute to the development of intercultural competencies and increase students’ competitiveness in the international labor market.
Scientific research
Scientific research forms the foundation of teaching quality and further Faculty development. Teachers and researchers participate in national and international projects, conferences, and professional initiatives, contributing both to the advancement of science and the practical application of knowledge.
The Faculty also publishes scientific journals and actively participates in the popularization of science, including student involvement through research papers and conference participation.
Dr. Mijo Mirković (1898–1963)

"It is not possible to go back; the only possible and natural path is forward. This means a path toward economic development, toward entering full civilization!"
The Faculty is named after Academician Dr. Mijo Mirković – Mate Balota (1898–1963), one of the most versatile Croatian intellectuals of the 20th century. He was an economist, historian, sociologist, writer, and journalist, as well as a dedicated educator whose work influenced many generations of students.
His ideas on the importance of economic development, education, and social responsibility remain relevant today. Dr. Mirković advocated progress based on knowledge, work, and openness to the world—principles reflected in the Faculty’s present activities.
In addition to his scientific and professional contributions, he left a strong mark on public and cultural life. His interdisciplinary approach and broad range of interests make him a lasting role model for the academic community. The initiative to establish the Higher School of Economics dates back to 1956, when Academician Mijo Mirković (Mate Balota) proposed the founding of the Adriatic University.
His idea of the necessity of moving forward and developing society continues to serve as guidance in shaping modern education and the role of the Faculty in society.
