The ARCHAEODIGIT project is focused on modernising current practices in the management of archaeological sites by developing an innovative and efficient methodology for their preservation, interpretation and enhancement. The methodology envisions an integrated strategy aimed at attracting new visitors, including:
Online promotion of off-season itineraries featuring interactive exhibitions and on-site applications
Use of engaging interactive and immersive technologies (e.g. Metaverse, Augmented Reality)
Creation of a digital cultural trail combining archaeological heritage with intangible cultural assets and tourism-related information
This innovative methodology will be developed through a co-creation process involving all stakeholders from the territorial tourism ecosystem. It will be tested at four archaeological sites:
- Sepino Archaeological park (IT)
- Archaeological area of Helvia Ricina, Macerata (IT)
- Archaeological site of Fulfinum-Mirine, Omišalj (HR)
- Underwater archaeological site Trstenik-Kaštel Sućurac (HR).
The project also foresees a series of training activities aimed at equipping current and future professionals in the cultural and tourism sectors with advanced skills necessary for the effective application of the methodology and other key project outputs. These include masterclasses, transnational internships, the “Train the Mentors” programme and a MOOC.
Based on the project’s findings, ARCHAEODIGIT will launch a transnational joint strategy for the preservation, interpretation and valorisation of archaeological heritage within the tourism ecosystem. The strategy will propose a vision for inclusive and sustainable management of archaeological sites, grounded in an integrated and participatory approach. Importantly, it will be open to all interested stakeholders in the field of archaeological tourism, both within and beyond the Italy–Croatia Programme area.
The adoption of the new methodology and the Joint Strategy is expected to lead to an increase in visitor numbers at archaeological sites, by promoting cross-border archaeological itineraries. This will strengthen the competitiveness and resilience of the tourism sector, support its recovery from the pandemic, reduce the pressure of high seasonality typical of coastal tourist areas by redirecting visitor flows to nearby inland regions, and encourage off-season travel itineraries.
The ARCHAEODIGIT project brings fresh perspectives to the cultural and tourism sectors by merging heritage and technology.
